For over 20 years, the MPLC has been regarded as a leading source
of copyright information as well as provider of the Umbrella
Licence® for non-commercial movie exhibitions. In 2003, the MPLC made it’s European headquarters in the UK.
Licensing operations are now being managed from offices across Europe; current territories include Spain, Germany,
Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Romania, Poland and the Republic of Ireland.
Since its creation, the use of film media for home-use only has
expanded far beyond its original purpose. Today, organisations
use movies not only for entertainment, but as training
tools and supplements to their existing programs.
Prior to the MPLC’s creation, public performance licences
were issued on a title-by-title basis, a time consuming and
expensive process for the group wishing to show the movie.
In December, 1986 the MPLC began issuing
blanket or Umbrella Licenses, which would allow an organisation
an unlimited number of showings of titles from all MPLC authorised
producers for a flat, annual fee.
Currently, over 450,000 locations around the world are covered
under the MPLC Umbrella Licence, including multi-national
companies, government agencies
and non profit organisations.
The MPLC has offices across 5 continents from the Headquarters in Los Angeles, California USA,
to Europe, Asia, Australia and South America. A network of anti-piracy co-operation supports local
investigations and prosecutions on behalf of the creative community. In the UK, the MPLC is a
member of FACT, The Federation Against Copyright Theft Organisation.
